Being compliant and protecting the environment is the only way we do business. To ensure your business is protected from state and local fines, our trained staff is current on all regulations to protect your business. Because we manage two Subtitle D landfills, we partner with regulatory agencies to make certain your waste streams classified as "Special Waste" are safely and smartly disposed.

Acceptance Hours & Appointments

Special Waste is accepted most days at Metro Park East and Metro Park West Landfills with an active approved permit for disposal issued by Metro Waste Authority.

Weather may impact special waste disposal. Sign up for alerts or call ahead at 515.967.2076 to verify.

Liquid Waste disposal requires scheduled appointments, an active approved permit for disposal, and is only accepted at Metro Park East Landfill, Monday-Friday, from 7 AM-2 PM, regardless of weather.

Waste Profile Form

All Special and Liquid Waste disposal inquiries begin by completing the Waste Profile Form below.

Waste Determination
To get an accurate waste determination, it is important to be as detailed as possible when filling the form out. Special Waste staff can aid in filling out the form, but it is ultimately the responsibility of the waste generator to make an accurate waste determination as to whether the waste is hazardous or not according to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations and the Iowa Administrative Code.

There are many companies in the state of Iowa skilled in making waste determinations, and we recommend utilizing them to ensure an efficient permitting process.

Special Waste Authorization
After the Waste Profile Form is completed and we feel an appropriate amount of information has been provided, some wastes may also go through the Iowa DNR to be issued a Special Waste Authorization (SWA). The intent of an SWA from the DNR is to assist in providing safe and proper management of disposal of wastes that meet the definition of “Special Waste” laid out in 567 IAC 109. These are wastes that tend to present a threat to human health or the environment or wastes that are difficult to manage during disposal at sanitary landfills.

Important Notes
The completion of the Waste Profile Form does not guarantee the issuance of Special or Liquid Waste. If a waste is found to be hazardous, it will not be issued a permit for disposal and must be handled according to the guidelines set forth in 40 CFR.

Information such as Safety Data Sheets, Certified Analytical Reports, Memos/Letters, and Generation Process Knowledge are important in the permit application process.

We will not guarantee the time it will take to issue a permit as we carefully review each application to ensure information provided is accurate and detailed enough to make a sound decision on handling disposal in our facilities.

Note: Asbestos from within Metro Waste Authority’s Comprehensive Planning Area does not require the Waste Profile Form but does require an Asbestos Shipment Form. All asbestos originating outside of our Comprehensive Planning Area requires a Waste Profile Form and coordination with our Special Waste Representative to approve and arrange disposal.
