As the agency leading the charge in terms of ‘Where It Should Go,’ we are committed to keeping Central Iowa’s recycling program not only going, but growing. That’s why, this November, we’ve opened the doors to our very own recycling facility!
This state-of-the-art facility is the new home for recycling from your Curb It! cart and beyond. At the facility, recyclables are sorted into material types and sold to manufacturers, who turn them into to new and exciting items.
We anticipate at least 30,000 tons of recycling to come to the new facility in the first year of operations, so it’s important the right materials make it there! This starts with your recycling choices at home.
Toss the right things in…
When it comes to knowing what belongs in your Curb It! cart, stick with the basics.
This includes:
- Plastics with twist-off lids
- Aluminum and tin cans
- Cardboard
- Newspaper
- Junk mail
- Juice cartons
- Glass
…and keep the wrong things out
While the new recycling facility features advanced sorting technology, placing the wrong items in your Curb It! cart can slow down, or even derail, recycling efforts. Items to keep out of your cart include:
- Plastic bags
- Plastic cups
- Diapers
- Pizza boxes
- Hazardous waste
- Styrofoam
- Yard waste
By sticking to the recycling guidelines, you can help us provide a sustainable future for recycling in the metro!
