battery containers

Batteries power our everyday lives from remote controls and cell phones to power tools and electric toothbrushes. But when they run out of juice, it’s important to know where they should go!

Disposing of batteries incorrectly by tossing them in the garbage or recycling cart can pose serious safety hazards. That’s why we've partnered with communities across the metro to install new battery drop-off containers, making responsible disposal easier than ever!

Why Battery Disposal Matters

Batteries and rechargeable electronics contain hazardous materials that can be flammable or leak harmful substances. When improperly disposed of, they can cause fires in waste collection trucks, landfills, and recycling facilities. Safe disposal protects workers, prevents fires, and ensures valuable materials are recovered and repurposed.

Find a Drop-Off Location Near You

With the new battery drop-off containers, residents can now safely and free of charge dispose of household batteries and small rechargeable electronics at convenient locations in the community.

FIND YOUR NEAREST DROP-OFF

Simply bag each battery using bags provided on the container and drop them into the labeled slot. It’s that easy!

What Can You Drop Off?

You can bring the following batteries to the drop-off containers:

  • Household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, and button batteries)
  • Batteries from power tools
  • Rechargeable electronics like laptops, tablets, cell phones, and smartwatches

More Ways to Dispose of Batteries & Electronics

If you have larger batteries or bulk electronics, we offer additional disposal options!

What Happens Next?

Once collected, batteries and electronics are sent to Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off in Bondurant. Certified staff inspect and sort the materials, and electronics may be refurbished or broken down into scrap metals and plastics, while batteries are sent to partners who recycle them into new materials, including new batteries!
