Metro Waste Authority offers OSHA-compliant HAZWOPER training to equip workers with essential skills for safely handling hazardous materials on the job. The training ensures compliance with OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard, which requires that employees understand the potential hazards of chemicals they may encounter. Participants will learn how to manage and respond to hazardous substance emergencies effectively, prioritizing safety at every step.

What is HAZWOPER?

HAZWOPER stands for "Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response," governed by OSHA standards 29 CFR 1910.120 and 29 CFR 1926.65.

Who Needs This Training?

HAZWOPER training is required for individuals involved in:

  • Government-mandated cleanup operations
  • Corrective actions for sites under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
  • Cleanups at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
  • Operations at treatment, storage, and disposal (TSD) facilities
  • Emergency responses to hazardous substance releases

Training Requirements

The training requirements depend on the worker's role:

  • 24-hour HAZWOPER Training: This training is for workers with occasional site access who do not participate in actual clean-up operations.
  • 8-hour Annual Refresher Training: Required annually for workers who have completed the 40-hour or 24-hour training.

Course Details

HAZWOPER certification is valid for 12 months, and an annual 8-hour refresher course is available to maintain compliance.

Space is limited to 25 people per class.

Location: Metro Recycling Facility (4185 SE Beisser Drive, Grimes, IA 50111)

Cost: $50 for 8-hour training, $150 for 24-hour training. Free for those in the Metro Waste Authority service area*.
